The Westerville North girls basketball team came from behind to defeat visiting Worthington Kilbourne 51-45 on Jan. 8, 2021.
The Warriors improved to 6-0 (4-0 OCC) before facing host Olentangy Berlin on Jan. 9.
North was led by sophomore Kayla Curry-Brown with 14 points while junior Charia Smith added 13 and senior Imari Martin 12.
Curry-Brown made one of two free throws to put the Warriors up 47-45 with just under two minutes remaining, Smith scored inside with a minute left and Curry-Brown concluded the scoring with two free throws.
“In the second half we came out and locked in defensively,” said Warriors coach Lamont Tillman. “The defense just energized the offense and we got some easy buckets. Every game we feed off of our defense.”
Kilboure led 16-9 after the first quarter, but North responded in the second and trailed 24-20 at the half. A big 21-point third quarter gave the Warriors a 41-36 lead entering the final period.
“It really was a group effort,” Tillman said. “Emoni Finch and our guards, Imari and Kayla. The onus was really on them because we knew it would be up to them to really get it done. Also, our bigs in the second half helped and made Kilbourne shoot over extended hands, which gave us a good chance to come up with the ball.”
